Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages
Sussex East: Guestling Ghosts
About the team
Track was in Water Mill Lane in a sand pit, with a big mound in the middle. The only way the referee could see all the action was to stand on top of the mound.
According to John & Sue Drury, the name 'Ghosts' possibly came from the Scrag Oak Tree in Watermill Lane, this tree being used in it's time as the 'hanging tree'. There was also a property in the lane known as the 'Spooky Cottage'.
The Sand Pit was filled in many years ago, but the entrance plus the concrete bases for the machinery can still be seen opposite the caravan site.
