Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages
Warwickshire: Mercia CSC
About the team
The track was officially opened in March 1982 by Larry Grayson.
Built as a community project under the auspices of the local police, the opening marked the end of a three year campaign to bring sporting facilities to the young of Wood End, an area of social deprivation on the outskirts of Coventry.
The £17,000 cost of the project was financed by grants from various charitable organisations including the Sports Council (£6,000), the Variety Club of Great Britain(£6,000) and the Grantham Yorke Trust(£2,000).
A further £1,250 was also secured for an adjacent Junior Track, plus a lucrative sponsorship deal was signed with D & J Insurances, with the team riding in their distinctive colours of amber, white and blue.
