Cycle Speedway Teams Down the Ages
Devon: Flowerpot Flyers
About the team
Team was based in Newtown, Exeter.
Interesting Facts.
Five of the riders, namely Collett, Forte, Gregory, Sandy and Searle formed a group, calling themselves the "Spartans". This group was born in Fortes Ice Cream Factory in Preston Street, Exeter, even using one of the ice cream vans to transport themselves and their instruments to gigs.
Over the next few years many new members would join the group, with many of the original leaving, but the one member to remain from the very beginning was John Gregory, who together with Ian "Bud" Street formed a new band in 1967. Cliff Andrews then joined the group as the drummer. This group went professional in 1967, performing at Butlins, Minehead in July of that year, calling themselves the "Graded Grains". They continued for many years to follow, with their last performance being on the 31st January 1986.
