Kent: Cray Tigers

About the team

The team were founded in 1949.

The track was on Farmland in Cockmannings Farm Track, Chelsfield Road, at the junction of Cockmannings Road and Cockmannings Lane, St Mary Cray. The land was part of  Cockmannings Farm, off Chelsfield Lane. This has now been returned to agriculture.

Track built on old V2 Bomb Site.

The track itself had an exceptional surface, with stands, fence, starting gate, lights, public address system together with good organisation. The riders raced in uniform clothing, complete with boots and crash helmets.

1949. Track was 94 yards. Track Record was 49.0 seconds(four laps).

Club Chairman: Mr Michael Slater.

Club Manager: Mr Rosser.

Club Secretary(1951): M. Slater, 20 Chelsfield Lane, St Mary Cray, Kent.

Club Secretary: T. Forrester,  2 Waldens Close, St Mary Cray, Kent.

Individual Honours.

1949 & 1950 Jim Henderson won the Kent Senior Individual Championship.

1951 Roger Rance won the Kent Senior Individual Championship.

1952 Alan Fleet won the Kent Senior Individual Championship.

1954 D. Read won the Kent Senior Individual Championship.

Team Honours.

1950/51/52 won the Senior Kent County League.

1959 won the Senior & Junior Kent County League.


The track cost £100 to build in 1949, and was modelled on the New Cross Speedway Stadium, with floodlights, Electric Starting Gate, Properly constructed pits, Wire sprung fence, a Judges box, Seating for spectators, and even a buffet!

The Cray Tigers visited Holland in 1950, winning all seven matches, two of these being against the famous Hollandse Welpen club and a Dutch Representative side.
